In Newport News, Virgina!

Well, we made it!  We’re here at our second home with our good friends in Newport News, Virginia.  Thank you so much Seth & Janelle for hosting us again!

I will say, travel with children in one word, brutal.  Shirlene and I were commenting on how easy travel is when you are single or as a couple, its a breeze, almost a joy.  And don’t get me wrong, we LOVE our kiddos, it is just exhausting traveling with children (those of you with kiddos know exactly what I’m talking about).

Our trip was fairly eventful, in summation, on the plane from Portland to DC, which is about 5 hours, Ethan slept about 20 minutes, pretty much as we landed, he leaked through his diaper on the plane onto me and when I went to change him I found the plane had no changing tables.  So, trying to change him in the small-tiny lavatory was a challenge and he was not happy, in fact he got so upset he threw-up all over the mirror, sink, toilet, floor and me after his extreme crying fit.  While I tried to comfort him with one hand, I was moping up vomit with the other.  I opened the lavatory door to find a line of people waiting, needless to say the next woman in line had quite an aromatic experience.  Again, for those of you with kiddos, this is not unusual.  ;)

We arrived in DC and only had 40 minutes between flights, I loaded up my body like a pack mule (like most dads do) and we traversed the very efficient DC airport for about 12 miles to arrive at the next gate.  We boarded the plane, last and just as we settled in they announced a problem with the plane, the A/C didn’t work (they said) and it would be 30-60 minutes.  Well our 4:05PM flight was delayed every 25 minutes for 25 minutes until it was finally canceled at 10PM.  By then we had already booked on a different flight at 10:19PM hoping that our 18 pieces of checked luggage would be transferred.  We boarded that plane with half of us literally asleep and unable to walk, flew to Norfolk where we were so happy to see, Seth.  He totally had an angelic glow, I promise.  He brought the minivan, the rental car and we loaded all 22 pieces of baggage and headed to the Lambert plantation.

After food by our dear friend Janelle and showers (no not with Janelle) we were in our beds about 2AM.  A long day, up at 4:30AM, to bed at 2AM.

We are so happy to be relaxing in Newport News and as for United Airlines – 3 strikes, your out.  ;)

Oh! I am so sorry! Well, glad you made it there in one piece, but sorry that it wasn’t a smoother trip.

Oh Bobby…I FEEL your pain having made several, mult-day airplane trips with very little ones and making the DRIVE from PDX to Michigan with those little ones once too. :-)

So glad you arrived well…good to keep up with you.

I have been praying for safety for you all, and strength and comfort. I see I shall need to pray very specifically about travel mercies to Him who understands even the astounding world of traveling with children. A new dimension–talk about sandpapering your spirit! I love how you manage to tell the story with humor, Bobby. I can see (and smell) it all too clearly, having traveled with 3 little girls. May the Lord keep you all well and provide for each step of the journey. Love, Janet
